Crowns

A crown is an indirect type of dental restoration that completely encircles or caps a tooth. The tooth is modified and prepared with special instruments. The most common method of crowning a tooth involves using a dental impression of a prepared tooth to fabricate the crown outside of the mouth. Your Coquitlam tooth repair expert at Sunrise Dental Clinic can then insert the crown at a subsequent dental appointment. Crowns can be made of gold, porcelain, or a combination of the two. It is the patient who chooses the material.

Restorative Dentistry for Crowns
and Bridges

Restorative dentistry, which refers to the restoration of damaged, decayed, or lost natural teeth, revolves around crowns and bridges. Once your Coquitlam dentist has examined your teeth and evaluated your dental and medical history, he or she will be ready to provide a diagnosis and suggest treatment options. A crown may be constructed to restore an individual damaged tooth to its original form and function, while a bridge may be utilized to replace one or more teeth. These restorations are cemented onto the teeth and are referred to as fixed prostheses, as opposed to a restoration of missing teeth with a removable appliance or prosthesis.

You will likely need a dental crown if:

  • Your tooth has undergone significant decay and not enough tooth structure remains to support a filling or an inlay/onlay.
  • Your tooth is fractured and cannot be built up using traditional composite bonding techniques.
  • You have a large cavity, because a crown gives your tooth additional protection over a large composite filling or an inlay.
  • You have a dental implant, in which case a crown will be fitted to the abutment of the titanium implant.
  • You have undergone a root canal treatment, because a crown is often needed to prevent the tooth from fracture and loss.
  • You grind your teeth and have a poor diet, because acid erosion may reduce your teeth to a point where the only option available is to crown them.
  • The aesthetics of your smile is a high priority, in which case you may want all porcelain cosmetic crowns.

Bridges

A bridge is a fixed partial prosthesis that spans the empty space left by a missing tooth. The procedure involves a local anesthetic and the preparation of two or more abutment (neighboring) teeth. Once this has been accomplished, an impression is made and sent to the dental laboratory for fabrication of your new tooth. There are different types of bridges, which are classified by how they are fabricated and the way they anchor to the adjacent teeth.

A conventional bridge is fabricated by reducing the teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. The extent of the reduction is determined by the chosen restorative material and the location and position of the anchor teeth to accommodate the material to be used. The materials used for bridges include gold, porcelain fused to metal, and occasionally, porcelain alone.

When do you need dental bridges?

Bridges are recommended when one or more missing teeth are affecting

  • Your smile and appearance.
  • Your bite.
  • Your speech.
  • The integrity of the neighbouring teeth.
  • The shape and structure of your face.

When rates of gum disease and tooth decay increase as a result of food accumulated in the gap, a bridge is in order.
